Professional Keyboardist Seeking Experienced Guitarist For Original Music Project Keyboardist / vocalist with over 25 years performing and composing experience, is seeking a professional guitarist to collaborate with, for serious original blues/jazz music project. The original material has a definite “Steely Dan” feel to it, with tight rhythm & blues chord progressions holding the foundation together, while building more complex jazz like melodies and leads on top of that funky foundation. In terms of guitar style, I’m seeking a guitarist with a style similar to Walter Becker, Jeff Baxter, Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, or Mike Stern. Ideally, seeking a guitarist with lead and rhythm abilities, as well as vocal talent and original material. A background in electric blues will be more appropriate for this project, than a background purely in traditional jazz. This project will be focused initially on showcases, festivals, and concert performances, eventually leading to recording and touring. Will need a committed professional musician with positive attitude, and the willingness to share common goals. (12/08) New! The new session at Swallow Hill begins January 5 and continues through March 1 .

A new class I am offering will be of great help to many of you. On Wednesday nights at 8:00 I'll offer Blues Harmonica Ensemble. The idea for this class began in the intermediate class in Boulder. We came up with three different rhythm and melody parts for "Help Me" and suddenly we had a very cool harmonica band. What you will learn from this is what to play when you're sitting in and playing with others. You'll learn rhythm parts, fills, and solos for several classic blues songs. The class will basically be an organized jam session. It'll be a lot of fun plus next time you play in public you will be armed with lots of cool ideas that will make the ensemble sound hipper and you will be loved by all.

Plan to attend the Amplified Harmonica Workshop on Saturday, January 17. You'll have lots of opportunity to play through several vintage and modern amplifiers, using a wide selection of microphones and effects pedals. Why should the guitar players have all the fun anyway?

For those about to rock... On Monday evenings I offer Blues Harmonica Levels I, II, and Intermediate. On Wednesdays, for the folk and country styles, I offer Americana Harmonica Levels I and II. I am also available for private lessons on Mondays and Wednesdays. For more information go to www.swallowhillmusic.org (Clay Kirkland)

Teaching Advanced Rock and Blues Guitar for 33 Years

My specialties are:

**CAGED fretboard theory. Learn CAGED and the fretboard will open an exciting new world of guitar for you. You'll never look at the neck again the same way.

**Slide guitar (bottleneck). Electric, acoustic or lap, brass or glass. Play 3- to 6-string chords, bend strings under the slide, learn vibrato, in regular or open-E tuning.

**The art of comping, or playing the rhythm guitar interestingly and with variety. Once you know CAGED, you'll never be stuck playing rhythm in the same position or the same boring way. Also learn 100s of chord substitutions for a cooler, hipper sound.

**Lead guitar. I will teach you how to play lead and solos in any style, and how use the different scales and modes, plus tips and tricks.

**Teaching you any song you want to learn. Are you stuck trying to learn a certain song, or how to play a certain style? Want to learn the SRV sound, or Albert Collins? Roy Buchanan or Robben Ford? I can show you how to get that sound, and how to play the licks that sound like them. Just have the CD, sheet music (I read treble clef fluently), or guitar tab ready, and you will know it within an hour.

I don't need to see you every week unless you really want it. One-time lessons just to learn a song or some technique are OK. A parent of one student told me recently: "He is truly inspired and comes back so psyched up. He has been good with going thru the scales and chords and is learning lots. One thing he will say is that now when he is playing or learning a song he can see a lot more of what is going on. Also he has lost his fear of attempting to play single notes and it seems the scales and exercises have helped. You really have helped him turn the corner."

I'm available for intermediate and advanced students in Boulder. Just reply to this ad. I charge $50 per hour, including free hand-outs of the material. You may record the lesson if you wish.

Put together a master class of 5 people and you learn for free. cb@rickroseberry.com

(9/08) ROCK ‘N’ ROBIN’S CELEBRATES 25 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

On October 13 , local record store and gift shop, Rock ‘n’ Robins, 804 S. College Ave., Fort Collins, will celebrate their 25th year in business as purveyors of rock - n - roll.

Originally opened in Macomb, Illinois in 1983, the store was moved to Fort Collins at the end of 1997, and re-opened in January of 1998. Since then, several other record stores have opened and closed, and two other local favorites - ABCD’s and Front Range Records - have shut their doors forever.

The “about us” section on the web site rocknrobins.com reads:

Rock 'N' Robin's opened in 1983, in Macomb Illinois, where we were infamous for miles in every direction. In 1990, a poster put in the window to display Jane's Addiction's new album, Ritual de lo Habitual was confiscated by the local police, with a warning issued to Robin (yes, there IS a Robin) that she might be arrested at any time at the pleasure of the local city attorney. This prompted a call to the American Civil Liberties Union (Chicago branch), and coverage by ABC, NBC, CBS, MTV, CNN, the New York Times, and many local and regional newspapers and radio stations. International coverage was given by CNN. The city was forced to return the posters and issue an apology.

In January, 1998, Rock 'N' Robin's moved to 804 S. College Avenue, Fort Collins Colorado. We have been operating at that location ever since. Come in and discuss civil liberties any time, and maybe hear some new music.

Since reopening in Fort Collins, the store has expanded to include glass pipes, hookahs, and shisha, while still carrying vinyl both new and used, compact disks, DVDs and all of the paraphernalia associated with college life such as posters, tapestries, beaded curtains, incense, black lights, local concert tickets, t-shirts and rock n roll related items.

The move to Fort Collins was precipitated, not by the harassment of the local Macomb city attorney, but by the fortuitous encounter between the owner, Robin Shaffer, and a Denver man, on the Harley Digest. The Digest is an internet forum for discussing and sharing tips and suggestions for owners of Harley Davidsons. (Robin and her husband both ride Harley Davidson FXR's) They dated for two years, and then decided to get married, prompting the move.

“I came from a community of 20, 000,” said Robin, “and I just couldn’t see moving to Denver. We looked for a place to live and to relocate the store within a reasonable commute of Denver, and that’s how I found Fort Collins. I particularly loved the small town feel of Old Town, and the relaxed friendliness of the community. Macomb was very much a farming community, and Fort Collins had a similar feel. Add a university to the mix, and it was a recipe for success.”

Although greatly looking forward to the special anniversary, Robin will not be in town on the special date. “I was in a car accident in Jamaica in December of 2006. I fractured several ribs and broke bones in my foot, but the worst part was breaking my jaw in two places, and knocking the ball out of the socket on the right side of my jaw. After finding the local Jamaican hospital devoid of doctors, I spent the night and got on a flight the next day for Denver. My husband picked me up at DIA and drove me to Poudre Valley. The surgery to put the front break back together was done three days later, but the ‘condyle surgery’ to fix my broken hinge had to wait until the bone healed enough to be re-broken, and my teeth were put in position. The surgery is scheduled for October 2, in Santa Barbara, CA., but I have to stay for another two weeks afterwards. I am not only not looking forward to being wired shut again, I am sad to miss this special anniversary in Fort Collins.”

Local resident and store manager Josh Lawson is buying into ownership of the store. He will be responsible for not only his own duties, but Robin’s as well while she recovers. He appreciates the fact that the store is not only oriented toward sales, but also toward providing a place for young and old to gather and share ideas about music, politics, and life.

When asked about his interest in the business, Mr. Lawson replied,"Robin really is a one of a kind individual. I've learned so much about not only running a small business, but also life in general. I feel incredibly fortunate to be in business with someone who shares the same values as I do. Only a tiny fraction of people love what they do for a living, and I definitely feel lucky to be in that tiny fraction."

Special deals and sales for the anniversary are still in the planning stages. Feel free to call the store or stop in to find out what will be happening, or to voice your opinion about the upcoming presidential election. “We will certainly be celebrating 25 years of experiments in rock n roll!”

Expert Vintage and New Guitar repairs, modifications, restorations. My name is Bruce Taylor and I am a Certified Luthier working out of my own home. My passion for over 40 years now has been guitars. I take great pride with being able to give the musician their tone that they want to hear. I am a professional player myself and I know how important my tone is to me. I know as with all musicians that sound is everything or what is the point in playing at all. I give all my customers this same attention to tone as I do for myself. I have my own Custom Guitar Series, Acoustics, Acoustics/Electrics, and solid body Electrics in several different body styles. All are completely hand made, with great attention to detail and playability with Superb Tone. I take my work very seriously and make sure my customers are completely satisfied with their instrument before they leave my shop. I have done 1000's of different mods over the years as well. So if you have that special mod you want done then I can do it. Guitars are my passion and I enjoy making every one of them have the tone its owner wants and needs to hear. I have local recommendations as well as pictures to show you my work. Shop rates are now $50 an hour plus all parts, materials, and S&H as needed. Call me at 720-381-0272 or email housezoo at hotmail

(9/08) The guitar I have for sale is a National Duolian, 14-fret neck, from the early 1930s. It has recently been converted from a square neck, but still has the original neck in place. The work was done in the famed shop of Dan Erlewine in Athens, Ohio, and the new frets have been dressed on a German PLEK machine, the very latest in technology. It has a brand-new cone inside and an appropriately funky hard case. The instrument is worth maybe as much as $3000, but I'm asking $2500. That price is flexible to some extent because I don't have room to carry the guitar in my car! If you are interested, email spencer directly
